A new book on Maria Callas (1923-1977), one of the greatest opera singers, has been published in Greek in the centenary year of the diva’s birth, offering a portrait based on interviews and sources of the “real Maria,” ANA reports.
The book “I am not Maria – I am Callas: her real life and an eternity of myths” was written by journalist Michalis Dimitriou, which aims to deconstruct media misinformation and stories surrounding Maria Callas, as reported in the popular press, about “dying early because of his desperate love for Onassis” and sacrificing himself for his stage persona, “paying for it in ineffable and deadly solitude.” He also refutes myths that she maintained a state of war with her mother and sister and spent the latter part of her life “mourning Onassis and his lost glory.”
