Innovative entrepreneurship flourishes in Greece: The architect-engineer who designed the first 3D jewelry

For her, architecture represents the largest part of her professional life. It’s art and science together, as he tells us. It was her desire to design that led Sissy Papakosta to study and work as an architectural engineer. It was through this that she was introduced to the world of architecture and assimilated its principles, as she tells us. 3D printing was chosen because it frees her from any design limitations, while still giving her the ability to accurately capture her inspiration in the material.

-Why did you decide to move from the field of architecture to that of jewelry?
“For me, design is a fundamental need. My love for design is why I became an architect. So I decided to start a project that would give me the opportunity to draw almost every day. My familiarity with digital technology over the years has helped me to be able to work on 3D programs. When I got my 3D printer back, I discovered something magical. I design something, and after a few hours it’s built with the push of a button. Holding my first printed object, a pendant from the ARCHI collection, all my senses awaken, hence the name SENSE-S.

-How did you come up with the idea of 3D jewelry?
“From the beginning, creating jewelry was not my goal. It happened along the way, when I decided I wanted to do something different, related to 3D printing. So I thought it would be very beautiful to design special jewelry, combining art and technology. Creativity plays a vital role in architectural studies. In practice, of course, during design one is faced with limitations which arise from laws, regulations or various other reasons. At some point, I felt the need to design without commitment. This was the trigger for looking for a different project.”

    -What exactly is 3D jewelry?
“These are jewelry designed in computer programs and printed on 3D printers, in Greece and abroad. Their material is polyamide. It comes in powder form and solidifies, depending on the design, using MJF Laser technology. A beautiful material, extremely light, flexible and above all certified skin-friendly. It is both velvety and sandy. Durable, hydrophilic and ecological.”

    – Why would anyone choose them?
“They are innovative, comfortable jewelry, with a strong character, a special design and a black color. Such jewelry creates a unique style in itself.

    – Your jewelry is also sold in Melbourne. Are you preparing new collaborations and in general something new for the future?
“I collaborate with stores and hotels in Greece and it makes me very happy, because people loved the 3D jewelry. Australia was born thanks to the implementation of a project with Greek designers and I was among the elected ones. My goal is to make the brand known worldwide and to expand my design concerns to industrial design, small objects and furniture. One of my partners has a new printer that uses sawdust and recycled plastic. The end product is wood. Great challenge! “.
