The American Hellenic Institute (AHI) will mark its Golden Jubilee with a concert by internationally renowned classical tenor Mario Frangoulis at the historic Warner Theater in Washington, DC, on Friday, April 12 at 8 p.m.
Mario Frangoulis, born in Africa and raised in Greece, celebrated a milestone year in 2023, marking his 35th anniversary on stage. Discovered by Sir Cameron Mackintosh in 1988 and signed with Sony Classical New York, his international career took off, competing for the top three positions with Andrea Bocelli on the Billboard charts for 52 weeks. He continues to captivate audiences with 22 albums and 7.5 million sales, demonstrating his mastery of classical music crossed with popular musical theater and other genres, while singing in five different languages.
Having performed on some of the most prestigious stages in the world including Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall (London), Dallas Opera, Orchestra Hall Chicago, La Scala (Italy) with numerous collaborations, Sarah Brightman, Placido Domingo, Justin Hayward (Moody Blues), Smokey Robinson and others, Frangoulis now returns to Washington to perform a variety of iconic and favorite songs from some of the greatest composers.
As a global ambassador for the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans since 2005, Frangoulis advocates for scholarships to help young people facing adversity in their higher education. Frangoulis’ commitment to humanitarian causes extends to organizations such as UNESCO Youth Greece, WCCCI, UNICEF’s “Fostering a Child” program and cancer awareness programs.
The April 12 Frangoulis concert will feature an enchanting collaboration with rising soprano Theresa Carlomagno, known for her timeless vocal talent. Carlomagno’s repertoire includes notable portrayals of characters such as Adele in Die Fledermaus and Adina in Donizetti’s L’Elisir D’Amore. Her recent acclaimed portrayal of Adina in Norma for the centenary of Maria Callas, alongside Frangoulis as Pollione, demonstrated her deep reverence and respect for the composer’s intention, infusing her performances with emotional depth and musical finesse.
This magical show promises to be a very memorable experience as Frangoulis, renowned for his powerful and moving voice, will take the stage accompanied by the Warner Theater Studio Orchestra conducted by Maestro Stathis Soulis. Her rich, resonant voice and warm personality will undoubtedly take audiences on a musical journey like no other.
