The 1st Prize of the International Documentary Film Festival held recently in Ierapetra, Crete, the Documentary Feature Prize as well as the Special Jury Prize for International Films were awarded during the 19th International Documentary Festival of Ierapetra to the film ‘The New Greek Americans 1960 – 2018’ by director Anna Giannioti. The late Oscar-winning and beloved actress Olympia Dukakis is the narrator of the documentary which describes in the best possible way what it means to grow up as a Greek from the other side of the Atlantic.
The New Greek Americans 1960 – 2018 is the third and final documentary in the trilogy funded by the California-based Greek Heritage Society and pays homage to second- and third-generation Greek-Americans through stories and moments that perfectly convey the sense of to grow. “to feel Greek”.
The story begins in the 1960s as young Greek Americans embrace the changing times despite their conservative upbringings. Each decade influences the Greek community with events such as the civil rights movement, the invasion of Cyprus, and the bid of Michael S. Dukakis for President of the United States. Participants share heartfelt and humorous stories that reflect “growing up in Greek”. The film provides food for thought in answering the question: Will the second and third generations engage actively enough with their treasured ancestral heritage to keep Greek culture alive in America? Olympia Dukakis is the film’s “hostess” and narrator.
