Dr. Kirill Pervun, a UNG finance faculty member, recently published a research article revealing that people who participate in youth sports are more likely to become entrepreneurs.
Assistant Professor at the University of North Georgia (UNG) finance Dr. Kirill Pervun with two co-authors recently published a research article entitled “From athletes to entrepreneurs” in the Journal of Small Business Management.
The authors analyzed the biographies of 2,000 American leaders and concluded that individuals who participated in competitive sports in their youth are more likely to become entrepreneurs later in life. Research indicates that participation in individual sports (such as tennis, running and swimming), but not team sports, determines outcomes. Additionally, being a young star athlete further increases the chances of taking entrepreneurial action.
Specifically, for every 100 new businesses started by non-athletes, athletes in individual sports started 298 businesses, and those who additionally demonstrated exceptional athletic achievement started even more (394) businesses.
