So much for the overcrowded European heavy hitters. To really get away from it all, we offer you some suggestions. First there is the Greek island of Hydra, where cars are prohibited and the small local population travels using mules, donkeys and small horses.
You can also try Datça, a untouched Turkish peninsula with rugged natural landscapes that seem far removed from the hubbub of tourist towns in this bustling corner of the Mediterranean.
Finally, there is the Finnish island of Ulko-Tammio, which this summer declared itself the first in the world to tourist island without telephone. One of Finland’s 41 national parks, the island is uninhabited, but is home to many rare birds and plants.
