The Patras Society of New York “Kostis Palamas” held its annual Vasilopita Cup on February 4 at Kefalonitiko Spiti in Astoria.
President of the Patras Society of New York, Panos Papadopoulos-Seretis, who officially took office last May, expressed his enthusiasm for the strong participation in the Vasilopita cutting event and noted that the important element was the growing presence of young people at Society events. after several years when the historical association had become inactive.
“We are delighted with the turnout,” Papadopoulos-Seretis said. “We are seeing people that we have seen over the years, but the most encouraging thing is that we are seeing new young people. These young people, with the appetite they have and the zeal they demonstrate, are ready to take over from us older ones and to perpetuate the tradition with our organizations, with our Federation, and with their presence in the Community and the parish and American society, to spread our culture, our morals, our customs and our language.
Immediately after the assembly of Vasilopita, a musical program by the Melodia group followed, while everyone was looking forward to the Society Carnival dinner dance, which will take place on Saturday, March 9 at the same venue. Papadopoulos-Seretis also emphasized that the big goal is to organize an event for Olympism, the philosophy of the Olympic Games, to highlight the role of Patras as the capital of the Olympic anthem.
“We want to organize a cultural event, probably at the end of May, linked to Olympism,” he declared. “Our goal is also for Patras to be recognized as the world capital of Olympism by UNESCO and as the capital of the Olympic anthem. That’s where Kostis Palamas comes from and he wrote the Greek Olympic anthem and we want him to be recognized.
