TORONTO — Nia Vardalos, the actress and screenwriter behind “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” can now add a new line to her resume: cultural ambassador.
The Greek-Canadian actress was to be honored Monday at a ceremony naming her cultural ambassador for Toronto’s Greek community for 2014-2015.
Vardalos, who is in Toronto to star in Theater 20’s production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Company,” rose to fame in 2002 with her role as a Greek-American travel agent struggling to get her zany family to accept her non-Greek fiancé.
The Winnipeg-born star was scheduled to receive a plaque recognizing her commitment to the Greek community at 6 p.m. at the Polymenakion Hellenic Cultural Center, followed by a youth dance performance and autograph signing.
The Toronto Greek Community represents more than 150,000 Canadians of Hellenic origin in the Greater Toronto Area and serves to promote Greek culture and heritage.
Vardalos recently announced that she is working on a sequel to “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” which will reunite original stars, including John Corbett, who played her future husband.
