March 25, 2024 – SACRAMENTO – The California State Assembly unanimously passed Assembly Concurrent Resolution 156 declaring March 25 2024, Greek Independence Day throughout the state. This resolution, written by Diane Papan, Assembly Membercommemorates the 203rd anniversary of Greece’s rebellion against Ottoman rule and celebrates the enduring principles of democracy and freedom shared between Greece and the United States.
Greek Independence Day has deep meaning, not only for the Greek community but for all Californians. It recalls the rich cultural heritage and remarkable contributions made by Greek-Americans to the diversity of the state.
“As we commemorate Greek Independence Day, we honor the courage and resilience of the Greek people throughout history. » said Papan. “Their struggle for independence and their unwavering commitment to democratic values continue to inspire us.”
The resolution recognizes the central role played by Greece in the development of democratic principles, with the ancient Greeks laying the foundations for a modern democracy. It also highlights the sacrifices made by Greek-Americans who integrated into mainstream society and excelled in various fields, including finance, technology, law, medicine and the arts.
March 25, 2024 will be observed as “Greek Independence Day: A Day of Celebration of Greek and American Democracy” throughout California. This designation reaffirms the enduring friendship and shared values between the United States and Greece, emphasizing the importance of democracy, freedom and human rights.
