Athens achieved a Top 20 European winter holiday destinations ranking, according to an index recently published by Allianz Partners United States.
The index was composed after an analysis of 608,000 itineraries of American travelers during the peak holiday travel period, which included round-trip flights from U.S. airports to Europe between November 23, 2022 and January 5, 2023.
The Greek capital, positioned at number 13 on the list, was among the biggest “climbers,” compared to the 2019 index. A 154 percent increase was recorded among U.S. travelers expected to visit Athens this holiday season.
Lisbon, Copenhagen And Stockholm also saw triple-digit increases, with Lisbon moving into the top 10 and Scandinavian capitals entering the top 20 since the last index published by Allianz.
Euro-dollar exchange rate boosts travel in Europe
The insurance company attributes the strength of Europe’s holiday travel season to the quality of the continent. rich cultural and historical heritage but even more, at the high exchange rate of American currency which has spurred a renaissance in overseas holiday travel.
“While inflation has caused prices of almost everything to skyrocket, travelers have also seen the value of the dollar rise, reach parity with the euro and pound sterling and increase their vacation budgets,” said Daniel Durazodirector of external communications at Allianz Partners USA.
According to the index, London continues to dominate the European tourism scene during the holiday season, with Paris remaining stable in second position. Madrid rose to complete the top three, jumping two places from the last index. Rome And Amsterdam follow at numbers 4 and 5 respectively.
