In recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15), Montclair State University will celebrate its diverse and vibrant Latinx community with a series of events focused on both culture and challenges, while commemorating Latinx pride .
This year’s theme for Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month is Unidos: inclusiveness for a stronger nation.
As Katia Paz Goldfarb, vice president of Hispanic Initiatives, says: “This year’s theme reminds us that in union is strength, together we are stronger and it is necessary to be inclusive within and outside our communities. This month gives us the opportunity to share, recognize and celebrate of donde venimos ya dónde vamos (where we come from and where we are going) as an intrinsic part of society.
Events are sponsored by various organizations and programs, including the Office of Hispanic Initiatives, Latino Student Organization, Hispanic/Latinx Alumni Network, Latinx Caucus, Office of Alumni Engagement, and organizations Greek and Latinx students, and include a flag raising. , lunch and cultural discussions (in person and online).

Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month Procession/Flag Raising Ceremony/Reception

Join the Office of Hispanic Initiatives, Latinx Caucus, LASO (Latin American Student Organization), and Latinx Greek and student organizations. The procession leaves Cole Hall at 11:45 a.m. to proceed to the raising of the flag on the flagpoles near the student center. Reception then at the Rathskeller in the Student Center).

Dr. Jasmin Mena: The Benefits and Perils of Black Racial Identity Development Among Black Latinxs

Professor Mena will discuss the conditions of anti-Black racism that require coping resources such as strong and positive ethnic and racial identities. She will present her research on Black racial identity and associated favorable and unfavorable correlates among Black Latinxs and suggest avenues for future research.
