Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with UNESCO Director Audrey Azoulay at the organization’s headquarters in Paris.
According to government sources, Mr. Mitsotakis and Ms. Azoulay discussed Greece’s initiative to protect cultural heritage from the effects of climate change. The same sources affirm that there was also talk of the conversion of Hagia Sophia and the Chora monastery into a mosque by Turkey, a choice which is in total contradiction with their character as monuments of global cultural influence. Kyriakos Mitsotakis welcomed the position taken by UNESCO on the issue, while calling for the continuation of UNESCO’s efforts to return the Parthenon sculptures to Greece.
