In popular culture, we often talk about “pouring one for the homies” using some sort of alcoholic beverage. A formal version of the libation ceremony is part of some Black and African weddings to celebrate the couple’s culture and honor deceased loved ones.

A prayer or speech is said to honor the elders while the libation is poured. “During the libation, we honor the wisdom, love and legacy of our ancestors and esteemed living elders,” explains Kirkley. “At its core, we invite the ancestors and their wisdom to guide the couple in creating their own marriage and their own legacy. »

According to Kirkley, the libation ceremony should take place at the beginning of the ceremony. Wine is considered a bridge between water and spirits and evokes camaraderie and friendship between the visible and invisible worlds.
Where are the liquids poured?
There are different places where the liquid can be poured. If the wedding takes place outdoors, the liquid is poured onto the ground. Indoors, a live plant is usually used. Sometimes the liquid is poured in all four cardinal directions.
What is the significance of where it is poured?
According to Kirkley, Earth represents where we came from and where we are returning. A living plant symbolizes life and our connections to the Earth. When the liquid is poured in the cardinal directions, it recognizes the different qualities of each of these directions and ensures that the entire Earth is covered.
