Organizers promise two weekends of feta and fun at the 23rd edition greek party returns to the Greek Community Center of Greater Victoria.
The annual festival takes place over several days, August 25-27 and ends September 1-4 from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily at 4648 Elk Lake Drive, off Commonwealth Place in Saanich.
According to organizers, this year’s Greek Fest “promises to be a delicious celebration of Greek cuisine and culture”, with daily performances and dine-in and take-out options via online ordering.
“The festival offers a diverse selection of authentic Greek starters, main courses, desserts, baked goods and soft drinks,” reads a press release.
“Highlights include traditional roast lamb, souvlaki, spanakopita, baklava, loukoumades, etc. Additionally, the event is licensed and they have partnered with Hoyne Brewery and Arterra Wines as beverage sponsors.
Organizers say attendees will be able to brush up on their story as the Greek Heritage Museum will also be on hand to showcase stories of prominent Greek personalities, as well as authentic Greek artifacts, daily from 2-6 p.m.
They say that Greek Fest, a family event, aims to “bring the community together in a spirit of family, friendship and philoxenia – generosity towards strangers, just as ancient Greek festivals did in the past”.
Speaking to CHEK News, Greek volunteer Peter Doukakis said the festival helps keep his legacy alive, especially after being away from home for so long.
“Well, you know, it’s so important to showcase my Greek culture. Both my parents are gone now and my community is all I have left,” Doukakis told CHEK News last year. “I think for a lot of us it’s the same. We are far from home and we don’t come home often.
Admission to Greek Fest 2023 is free for restaurant patrons and those ordering takeout, and more information about the event is online here.
