Greek wines are on the rise

Improved quality offerings have increased sales and support for GREEK wine!
    Wednesday August 2 at 7 p.m. – A Greek tasting with Thymiopoulos!
ONLY $20 per tasting + wines delivered to your home.

1st of August – The Greek wine market has long been committed to lower cost/value and lower volume wine offerings; and many have left American consumers less than thrilled. However, over the past two years, significant improvements in the quality of distribution of top wines arriving in the United States have significantly increased interest and sales penetration of Greek wines. Click here to see a recent report – which shows a decrease in cases but an increase in dollars.

By Ian Blackburn, wine industry veteran and buyer for his family’s store www.Merchantofwine.com – “Producers like Thymiopoulos, Tetramythos, Vaeni, Oenops, Kalogris, Anatolikos and Artemis Karamolegos, among others, have really impressed the consumer. » “The wines are authentic and not spoiled with Syrah, Cab or Merlot.” “Terroir speaks through indigenous grape varieties and we see comparisons like Barolo or Chablis… not bad company to keep. »

We are also seeing a growing interest in wine tourism, with our customers inquiring about tours and places to go tasting…. We responded with a travel offer for 2024 and increased educational interest in our programs and dinner offerings.

We have the privilege of spending an entire evening exclusively with Thymiopoulos, who will discuss Greek wines in depth with us.

Ian Blackburn will taste and interview one of Greece’s top producers, Apostolos Thymiopoulos – join Ian for this special tasting. Apostolos Thymiopoulos was the first to make wine in the family vineyards while studying oenology. Join LearnAboutWine on Wednesday, August 2 at 7 p.m. and embark on an unforgettable journey into the enchanting world of Greek wines. Buy your tickets HERE

Key grape varieties like Assyrtiko (white) and Xinomavro (red) are leading the way, but a growing selection of natural, rosé, sparkling and blended wines is making Greek wines much more interesting to the consumer.

“Independent wine merchants will continue to be the main growth avenue for Greek wines… a. Because the best producers have a limited supply and b. Greek restaurants, while becoming more well-known, are still rare…but moving to modern restaurants can be a great growth opportunity if they can find accounts with incredible seafood and/or meat selections” … “Scallops, Assyrtiko and Lamb”. with Xinomavro, it’s a natural pairing – says Blackburn”
