In December 2019, the Greek parliament passed a landmark law giving Greek expatriates the right to vote from abroad. In January 2024, Parliament adopted new legislation giving Greeks abroad the right to vote by mail in European Parliament elections and national referendums, provided they are registered on the Greek electoral lists. For the first time, on June 9, 2024, Greek citizens residing abroad, as well as those who are abroad but nevertheless wish to vote, will have the right to participate in the European Parliament elections by postal vote.
There are no conditions for Greek citizens to vote by post, except for their requirement to register on the online platform epistoliki.ypes.gov.gr. The platform started operating on February 19 and will remain open for registrations until April 29. Therefore, those wishing to vote by mail in the June 9 European Parliament elections must register before April 29. Those who need help registering on the epistoliki.ypes.gov.gr platform can call 24/7 at +30 210 626 6222 or contact their local Greek consular authorities.
It should be noted that Greek citizens abroad will be able to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming European Parliament elections exclusively by post, given that there will be no polling stations outside Greece.

On another front, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the Strategic Plan for the Greek Diaspora. The plan outlines the vision, strategic objectives and initiatives to further strengthen the Greek diaspora’s ties to the homeland. Consultation of the Plan will contribute to shaping a global, coherent and modern political framework.
