Honduras – its name derives from the Spanish word for “depths” – is a coastal country in Central America bordering the Caribbean Sea. It was part of the Spanish Empire from the 1500s until 1821 and became an independent republic in 1838.
More recently, potential changes to the Honduran Constitution have led to a military coup in 2009, which overthrew President Manuel Zelaya. In 2021, Zelaya’s wife, former first lady Xiomara Castrowon the election and became the country’s first female president.
