Kyriakos Mitsotakis issued a clear message of support for Ukraine on Thursday, a day after a missed Russian missile The Ukrainian president and the Greek prime minister lost hundreds of meters when they hit the port infrastructure of the city of Odessa, on the Black Sea.
“No one will intimidate us,” Mitsotakis said in a speech at the two-day conference of the European People’s Party (EPP) in Bucharest, Romania.
“I think we all have a message for the Kremlin: we will not be afraid, we will continue to support Ukraine and its brave citizens for as long as it takes. And we remain united on this issue,” he added.
He also said the EU had shown determination by supporting Ukraine with a united front. “Our enemies did not expect this. We support Ukraine financially and militarily, we impose sanctions on Russia.”
“We are sending the message that no violation of sovereign rights and international law will be accepted by the European family,” Mitsotakis added.
The attack reportedly took place at 11:45 a.m., while the Greek and Ukrainian delegations were visiting the historic port of Odessa. The meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Mitsotakis went as planned, despite the explosion.
Five people were killed in the strike and others were injured, but no injuries were reported among the two delegations.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council head Charles Michel condemned the attack in messages.
