Saanich Museum aims to preserve Greek culture through detailed education

The Greek Heritage Project Museum houses an archive of fascinating information and collections

Greek heritage is alive and well thanks to individuals dedicated to maintaining and sharing its ancient roots.

The Greek Heritage Project Museum in Saanich houses artifacts, historic dowry collections, preserved memorabilia and much more. The museum’s director, Wendy Smylitopoulos, is carefully responsible for the operation and its exhibitions.

Preserving Greek history in and around Greater Victoria through research and education is the goal that drives Smylitopoulos and the volunteers who help him bring together large amounts of detailed information into digestible learning.

“I’m not so interested in dusty books, but I’ve always been fascinated to learn what the Greeks wore, what they ate and how they made and grew it, what kinds of relationships they had and what that they’re what I’m doing now,” she said.

Although she has British roots, Smylitopoulos married a Greek and remembers her passion for learning about Greece when she was in 7th grade. “It’s a fascination, an itch,” she said.

A detailed genealogy project documenting the people and history of this community is underway. Smylitopoulos said she frequently finds herself welcoming volunteers to sort through the many available archives that require in-depth study.

“I’m looking for people who are passionate and interested in history – not dusty history, but real history – the history of the people themselves. Not so much about wars, generals or governments.

She said her interest lies in understanding the human character of culture and its roots.
