As the organization’s centennial approaches, AHEPA launched www.ahepahistory.orga website dedicated to the history of the organization, Supreme President George G. Horiates announced Feb. 15.
“What Greek-Americans have faced, experienced and accomplished is nothing short of astonishing,” said Supreme President Horiates. “We are proud to launch ahepahistory.org as a service to the community and all those with a direct interest in the history of the Greek American community. AHEPA is woven into the fabric of America. Throughout our nearly 100-year history, AHEPA has served as a critical vehicle for the progressive development and emergence of Greek American citizens in all facets of society. The website demonstrates this evolution and the contributions of Greek-Americans to society.
In addition to the history of AHEPA and extensive stories and data on Greek immigrants and immigration to America, well documented by George Leber’s “History of the Order of AHEPA: 1922 to 1972,” the website offers biographies of important figures of Hellenic and Philhellenic origin. in American history, lists distinguished recipients of the AHEPA Socrates Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Order; and links to a book published by AHEPA on America’s contributions to Greece’s struggle for independence, titled “The Greek War of Independence of 1821 and America’s Contributions to the Greek Cause “.
“We hope the website will grow with content to become a go-to resource for the public,” Horiates said. “As such, there is a crowdfunding appeal that we are asking AHEPA members, stakeholders and friends to support.”
He added, “We appreciate the hard work of the members of AHEPA Chapter 285 Bergen Knights of Tenafly, New Jersey, who took it upon themselves to bring the website online. We encourage districts and sections to follow their lead and also add their story to the site in celebration of AHEPA’s centennial.
