For the third consecutive year, the Greek Embassy in Washington opened its doors to welcome its young friends on Saturday, November 3, on the occasion of the “Become an archaeologist for a day” workshop which takes place as part of the Annual European Children’s Festival under the auspices of the EU Delegation to the United States.
Dozens of children had the opportunity to learn about ancient Greek civilization using museum kits filled with copies of Cycladic figurines, pottery works and educational materials from the Museum of Cycladic art of Athens. With the help of volunteers and graduate students in the United States, the children processed the original copies, learned how they were made, and painted their own works of ancient Greek art.
The Greek Embassy, with the cooperation of the Museum of Cycladic Art, has obtained very innovative and high quality educational materials, designed and implemented entirely in Greece by eminent international archaeologists, scientists and artists. The museum traveled to the US capital in 2016 with the sponsorship of John and Eugénie Coumantaros and has already enriched ancient Greek history lessons in various Washington schools, with the help of the embassy’s free loan program .
In fact, the network of museums expanded considerably in 2018, since the Greek Consulates General in Boston and Toronto (Canada), always in collaboration with the Museum of Cycladic Art and with the help of sponsors (National Hellenic Society , Bodossaki Foundation), have created their own loan programs for museums, schools and other institutions.
