The archaeological site of ancient Nemea will become the second heritage attraction in Greece to receive the EU heritage label, the Culture Ministry announced on Friday. ekathimerini.com reports.
The official awards ceremony will take place on June 13 in Brussels.
Located near the city of Corinth, Nemea is steeped in ancient history. Nemea hosted Panhellenic sporting games in ancient times, which have been revived in modern times. The 2,300-year-old Temple of Zeus sits next to a trail and museum built on the site.
“The inclusion of the archaeological site of Nemea on the list of the European Heritage Label constitutes further recognition of the importance of Greek cultural heritage for Europe,” said Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni.
The European Heritage Label is a recognition awarded by the European Commission to buildings, documents, museums, archives, monuments or events considered to be milestones in the creation of today’s Europe.
More than 60 sites have already been designated, including the “heart of ancient Athens,” which includes the Acropolis and surrounding archaeological sites.
Ancient Nemea, one of the most fascinating and well-developed sites in the Peloponnese, will join the Heritage Label list along with 11 others.
