A Greek hotel, the Calilo Resort on the island of Ios is one of the 11 most sustainable hotels in the world, according to the American lifestyle magazine. Veranda.
The magazine describes Calilo as follows:
“Located on the unspoiled island of Ios in the Greek Cyclades, this 30-suite luxury family resort was created with sustainability and ecotourism at the heart of its philosophy. The family worked to purchase a significant amount of land beachfront in Ios. to consciously leave 99% of the island undeveloped so that the island can retain its natural beauty for future generations. They also launched the Elektra Olive Tree Project, a conservation initiative aimed at restoring habitat that had previously been burned by wildfires and deforestation. To date, they have planted more than 68,000 olive trees and shrubs (including 550 century-old olive trees), and guests can “adopt” and name a tree, then follow its life cycle.
