Nearly 240 antiques and historical objects from 27 museums in Greece and abroad and 4 private collections are included in the new exhibition titled “Cheronea, August 2, 338 BC: A day that changed the world” which will be held opens at the Museum of Cycladic Art (MCA). in Athens on Thursday, reports ANA,
The exhibition highlights the importance of the Battle of Chaeronea in antiquity, during the transition from the Classical to the Hellenistic period. “The latter became an era where Greek civilization dominated for centuries and laid the foundation for what we call the Western world,” explains the MCA. “The theme is the battle which opposed the Macedonian army of Philip II to that of the allied Greek cities of southern Greece – and in particular the Sacred Band of Thebes and the army of Athens – a conflict which brought together for the first time the XVIII- Alexander, aged one year, at the forefront of history: Alexander who would soon conquer the world with his great campaigns in Asia.
