Actions to support cultural heritage in Greece totaling €274 million under regional programs and the Just Transition Fund were announced on Wednesday by the European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, to culture, education and youth, Iliana Ivanova, reports ANA.
Ivanova was responding to a question from MEP Maria Spyraki. His response indicates that a sum of 27 million euros has been allocated to ensure the preservation of historic buildings through the “Diatiro” initiative for Greece.
In his question to the European Commission, Spyraki raised “the major and important issue of the protection of 200 imposing buildings, an important architectural heritage, most of which are located on Vassilissis Olgas Street in Thessaloniki.” She had stressed that “these neoclassical buildings risk collapsing due to the high costs of their maintenance”, and she called for European funds to save them, as indicated in her communication.
