The Hellenic-American Cultural Foundation (HACF) presents a lecture with American University President Sylvia Mathews Burwell on life in public service on Thursday, March 14, at 6 p.m., at the University Club, 1 West 54th Street in New York.
HACF is honored to have Sylvia Mathews Burwell as the fourth speaker in its Peter T. Kourides Lecture Series, which was created to recognize the importance of the contributions of Greek Americans to public service and civil society.
Sylvia Mathews Burwell was named the 15th president of American University and is the first woman to hold the position. Under his leadership, American University more than doubled research funding from external organizations, launched the $500 million “Change Can’t-Wait” campaign, created four new research centers, endowed eight professorships faculty, created more than 150 scholarships and invested $109 million. under construction of a new “Student Thriving” complex.
Previously, President Burwell served in two positions in the United States government: Secretary of Health and Human Services and Director of the Office of Management and Budget. Additionally, President Burwell has also held leadership positions at two of the world’s largest foundations: the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Walmart Foundation.
With her presentation, President Burwell joins the Honorable Senator Paul Sarbanes, Ambassador John D. Negroponte, and former Director of Central Intelligence George Tenet, distinguished speakers from previous Peter T. Kourides Conferences.
Cocktails will begin at 6 p.m., followed by President Burwell’s presentation at 7 p.m.
