Ambassadors from 22 countries who helped Greece manage the summer 2023 wildfires were thanked by Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias at a special event on Tuesday, reports l ‘ANA.
Welcoming the ambassadors to the ministry, Kikilias proposed to organize a workshop on the importance of conclusions drawn from the experience of exchanging know-how and best practices in natural disaster management.
Referring to the extreme weather conditions recorded in Greece last summer, the minister highlighted that the humidity level in the country at that time was below 10%. Combined with prolonged heat waves, this situation generated “extreme weather conditions for 16 consecutive days in July, then again for several days in August”.
While Greece was “fighting the massive fire in Dadia (Evros, northern Greece), “storm Daniel arrived from Europe, forcing us, without any margin of time, to reorganize our forces and adapt to fighting floods, just like we did against fires. »
