Greek media reported that there was a strong confrontation in the Turkish Parliament between the ruling party (AKP) and the main opposition over the issue of some Greek islands in the Aegean Sea, which Turkey claims as its own.
Referring to the island of Imia in the Dodecanese region, Cavusoglu said it was a national issue and that the AKP was not responsible for what happened in 1996, because he was not in government at the time. The Turkish minister claims that Imia was “occupied” by the Greeks.
“We are continuing our diplomatic negotiations with Greece. If we do not agree, Parliament will decide on the alternatives and we will apply them. But it is a national policy.
