The Secretary-General of UN Tourism concluded an official visit to the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Zurab Pololikashvili led a high-level delegation to the country to join the official inauguration of the Tehran International Tourism Expo and for a series of bilateral meetings aimed at advancing common goals on resilience, diversity and rural tourism development.
Secretary-General Pololikashvili joined Iranian President, His Excellency Ebrahim Raisi, for the opening of the 17th edition of the exhibition. During this major event, UN Tourism reaffirmed its commitment to helping Iran develop its tourism sector through promotion and investment, while also helping the country train a new generation of tourism workers. Mr. Pololikashvili also met Tehran Mayor Ali Reza Zakani with bilateral talks focused on collaboration to make the city a more attractive destination for both tourists and investors.
The Secretary-General explored the Tehran International Tourism Expo alongside Iranian Minister of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Ezzatollah Zarghami and Deputy Minister Ali Asghar Shalbafian. UN Tourism leaders praised their hard work to develop the sector, particularly recognizing how tourism celebrates Iran’s diverse ethnic groups and traditions while providing a shared vision for the country’s future. Representing the growing network of UN Tourism affiliates, Abbas Abad Cultural and Tourism Zone CEO Seyed Hossein Hejazi also met with Secretary-General Pololikashvili to clarify the role the private sector plays in promoting tourism. common objectives.
In line with the Organization’s focus on rural development, Governor Malek Rahmati was presented with a plaque to commemorate the inclusion of Kandovan in the list of best tourist villages by UN Tourism. The significant potential for tourism growth as a pillar of rural development, benefiting communities across Iran, was also noted, with UN Tourism ready to work with destinations to help them join the Best Villages Network tourist.
