Based on progress in 2022, there is reason to be optimistic about the global direction on same-sex relationships, LGBTQ activists say.
In the second half of the year, there was a wave of movements to decriminalize same-sex intimacy in Singapore, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Barbados, and Antigua and Barbuda. These countries were among the last holdouts among countries with a history of colonial laws prohibiting such activities. “This feels like a turning point,” says Neela Ghoshal, senior director of law, policy and research for global advocacy NGO Outright International. Such developments “really allow us to say that there is a global norm that same-sex intimacy should not be criminalized.”
