ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Some Monroe County homeowners may have received inaccurate property tax bills in 2022. The county is now looking to fix the problem.
At a news conference Friday, Monroe County Executive Adam Bello said the county made a miscalculation. This resulted in some owners receiving too little of a sales tax credit and others receiving too much.
This miscalculation also impacted the city’s cash payments.
Bello said the miscalculation came from the new 2020 population census figures, which did not exclude village populations when they should have.
“So when we make these cash payments to cities, what happened is some of these cities started reporting a few weeks ago that it was a little less than what they should receive,” Bello said. “Could this have affected individual property owners as well, not just cash payments to the city?” But what about invoice credits? It was at this point that we discovered that the mistake may have been made. The population of the village was not removed from that of the city as it should have been.
Bello said property bills in the city of Rochester and all villages were not affected. The calculation error will be corrected in the 2024 tax bills released in December.
