The 2022-2023 UNWTO Student League concluded with a celebration of young tourism talents.
The Grand Final of the flagship event supporting tourism students brought together high school and undergraduate students from Switzerland and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The challenge of tourism for rural development
The 2022-2023 Student League challenged students to support rural development through tourism by creating Instagram accounts to promote a rural destination in their country.
For this grand finale, the jury was composed of national and international experts from UNWTO, academia and private sector stakeholders. To make its decision, the jury of experts assessed elements such as the innovation and feasibility of the idea as well as their potential to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The winning team in the High School category was Team Rose Brandis from Mješovita srednja škola Travnik in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the Undergraduate category, the jury named the VS-TIM team, Visoka škola za turizam i menadžment Konjic from Bosnia and Herzegovina and the SHL team from the Schweizerische Hotelfachschule Luzern in Switzerland as co-winners.
Journey to the final
After successfully passing the initial stage of the Final4 national competitions in their countries in 2022 and 2023, three teams qualified for the grand final, Team Rose Brandis, representing Bosnia and Herzegovina – Team Rose Brandis from Travnik mixed secondary school and the VS team. -TIM from Konjic College of Tourism and Management, and representing Switzerland – Team SHL from the Swiss Hotel Management School Lucerne.
For this first Grand Final, OMT counted on the partnership of the Complutense University of Madrid, affiliate member and member of the Council of Affiliate Members. The Complutense University of Madrid has been a true leader in knowledge for almost 800 years and has a long and proud history of producing the best minds and developing the best young talents. The Ayuntamiento de Madrid also contributed by showing the teams the beauty and hidden gems of Madrid.
Youth Empowerment for the Future of Tourism
The UNWTO Student League provides students with a platform that empowers and motivates them, giving them real-time knowledge of our sector and experience in working to create innovative and sustainable solutions for the challenges facing the sector is facing. This initiative not only brings tourism closer to younger generations but, by bringing these young people together with government officials, tourism industry representatives, experts and other major stakeholders, it also bridges the gap between the realities of the sector and student training. and training, enabling young people to enter the job market in the future as highly qualified and competent professionals.
