The European Commission on Tuesday officially created “EUNAVFOR ASPIDES”, the European military operation for maritime security and freedom of navigation in the context of the Red Sea crisis, reports ANA.
This operation will contribute to maritime security along major shipping lanes in an area including the Bab el-Madab Strait and the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the international waters of the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Sea of Oman, the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf.
The strategic objective of EUNAVFOR ASPIDES will be to escort ships in the area of operations, provide situational awareness and protect ships against multidimensional attacks at sea, “in full compliance with international law, including the principles of necessity and proportionality”, within the framework of a sub-area of the area of operations.
