Greek-American attorney Maria Markou was in Chicago last week to process expat citizenship applications under the auspices of the Greek Consulate General, as well as to deliver an informative speech to the public on bureaucratic and legal issues in Greece that are of concern to Greek-Americans. .
At the speech, held in the St. Demetrios of Elmhurst community event hall in Chicago, about 200 people were in attendance. They had the opportunity to ask and resolve critical questions on tax and inheritance issues, as well as questions regarding consular affairs, visas, conscription and changes regarding property registration and real estate transactions in Greece.
“We discussed issues related to naturalization, pensions, taxation, consular affairs, visas, conscription and land registry. In particular, we have seen great public concern over taxation, as well as conscription issues and changes to the law regarding unauthorized construction. Furthermore, we discussed the topic of divorces for foreign nationals, namely divorces granted in America which must also be recognized in Greece. Afterwards, a question-and-answer session followed and, at our expense, we hosted a reception for the participants.
