Greek Minister of Migration and Asylum Dimitris Kairidis met in Washington with Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration Julieta Valls Noyues and Deputy Undersecretary for the Homeland Security in charge of borders and immigration, Adam Hunter, reports ANA.
Kairidis spoke about the common challenges facing the United States and Europe regarding illegal migrant smuggling and legal migration, as the United States saw nearly 3 million illegal arrivals in 2023, or approximately ten times more than the EU. There has been consensus on the global nature of smuggling networks and their interdependence, as evidenced by irregular migrants from Latin America to Europe and sub-Saharan Africa to the United States. This highlights the need for closer transatlantic cooperation between the United States and the EU, they said.
