Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras visited the Agios Dimitrios Greek School in Astoria New Yorkdistrict and spoke to students, urging them to be proud of Greece not only for its past but also for its present. In its current handling of the refugee and migrant crisis, Tsipras noted, Greece is showing the human face of Europe.
Addressing the children, he declared that they were the followers from an old tradition where every Greek family has a desire, that their children study and become better than their parents. Tsipras thanked the children and their teachers for the warm welcome and said he was moved to see the young generation maintaining their origins.
“I also want to say that it is very touching to see that the Greeks of the second, third and fourth generation keep Greece deep in their souls, take care of it perhaps even more than us who stay in Greece.o,” he added.
The Prime Minister’s speech was briefly interrupted when one of the children in the school choir fainted and had to receive first aid. The young girl woke up and stood up to long applause, the Prime Minister reassuring her: “these things happen” and wish him a speedy recovery.
