Wine production in Greece this year is expected to fall by 30% due to late blight, the president of the Association of Greek Winegrowers, Yiannis Voyatzis, said on Tuesday, ANA reports.
Voyatzis met with Minister of Agricultural Production and Food Lefteris Avgenakis, who is on a four-day tour of Central Macedonia with a delegation. The meeting also included the Association of Wine Producers of Northern Greece.
Greek wine is one of the most important ambassadors of Greek production, the minister stressed.
Greek wine production includes many family businesses that have contributed to wine tourism and local economies. There are currently nearly 1,400 wineries and a total of 60,000 hectares (600,000 stremmas) cultivated, and these are focused on quality rather than intensive cultivation, Voyatzis said. There are nearly 160,000 families tending the vineyards, while the greatest advantage of Greek wine lies in its indigenous variations, he noted.
