The Hellenic Federation of South Africa on Monday commemorated March 25, 1821, the day Greece regained its independence from the rule of the Ottoman Empire, according to greekreporter.com.
Festive celebrations took place at SAHETI Greek School in the eastern suburbs of Johannesburg, where students took part in the Federation’s program including music, folk dances and a traditional march.
The SAHETI School was founded in 1974 by a group of founders under the leadership of George Bizos, a human rights lawyer who campaigned against apartheid in South Africa.
Its doors were open to all, welcoming very diverse communities to share its universal, values-based education.
Currently, SAHETI School is an independent English language school dedicated to the pursuit of excellence, while promoting the ethos and values of Hellenism.
The insightful motto “Know thyself”, based on ancient Greek thought, is at the heart of the school’s philosophy.
