Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh read and presented the proclamation, declaring March 25 to be Greek Independence Day in Syracuse. The event was attended by many members of the Greek-American community and Philhellenes, including Dr. James Telonis – President of AHEPA Syracuse Chapter 37 and event chair, New York State Rep. John Lemondes, St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church Parish Council President Peter Manolakos. , presiding priest of Sainte-Sophie, Rev. David Smith and AHEPA Empire 6th District Lt. Governor Michael Labatos.
Soloist Saraya Laughlin led the singing of the American national anthem and Hyacinth Labatos sang the Greek national anthem, both granddaughters of Mike and Connie Labatos. It is a signature annual event of AHEPA Syracuse Chapter 37 and the Greek American community of Syracuse and Central New York.
