US Senator Robert Menendez, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is expected to speak at the upcoming World Congress of the Cypriot Diaspora, scheduled for August 23-25 in Nicosia.
Thalia Polydorou Antoniou, head of the Overseas and Returnee Cypriots Service, highlighted the importance of Menendez’s participation in the conference, saying it is a historic event.
The opening ceremony of the congress will take place on August 22 at the University of Cyprus in Aglantzia, with a speech by President Nikos Christodoulides.
Antoniou highlighted the historical significance of Menendez’s presence, calling it a momentous occasion in the history of the Cypriot Diaspora Conference.
Senator Menendez, who also chairs the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, will personally address the Cypriot Diaspora Conference on Thursday, August 24.
In a recent statement, Menendez condemned Turkey’s continued aggressive behavior, including its actions in Varosha, and urged President Tayyip Erdogan to withdraw his troops from Cypriot territory, thereby facilitating the reunification of the island. It marked the 49th anniversary of Turkey’s invasion and occupation of Cyprus on July 20, 1974.
